Why publish your results, even if you’re not required to
Listed companies publish their results because they are required to. Other companies can choose to do so, and it often gives them an advantage.
- Reassure customers and suppliers. Published growth is better than assumed growth.
- Prepare for a fundraising round or sale. A public track record of results makes discussions easier.
- Recruit. Candidates look at how financially sound a company is.
- Ensure databases describe you accurately. Published figures replace estimates.
Listed and unlisted companies: what’s different
Listed company: the timetable, content and method of distribution are subject to regulated information disclosure requirements and market authority rules. The press release is approved by the finance department and published in accordance with these rules. Clarsource can provide additional distribution, but not as a substitute.
Unlisted company: you choose what to publish. Keep your metrics consistent from one year to the next so that results can be compared.
When to publish
On the date announced in your financial calendar, ideally before markets open or after they close if you are a listed company. Listed companies publish their results in accordance with regulated information disclosure requirements: coordinate with your finance department.
Which metrics to include and how to compare them
- Reporting period: half-year, financial year
- Revenue and its change, on a like-for-like basis if needed
- Profit: operating, net, or the metric you track
- Cash or debt, if relevant
- Outlook and targets
- A table of key figures
On Clarsource, these details are extracted into the structured announcement record, categorised under Results and shareholders.
